In Washington, residential settings for vulnerable adults and seniors — assisted living facilities, nursing homes and home-care services — depend on certified nursing assistants who can respond to a medical emergency. To keep residents safe, these settings expect their care staff to be trained in first aid and CPR.

Care staff working with residents are expected to be prepared for a cardiac or choking emergency. In Washington, candidates must complete a CPR course before applying for Nursing Assistant-Certified (NAC) certification; CPR is a core competency and the specific type (BLS/Healthcare Provider) is defined by facility rules.
A recognized, up-to-date CPR and first-aid certificate is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the aide's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
